Chapter 5

Olivia

It was Friday night, and the party on our floor was in full swing. Most of the students had their doors propped open so people could mingle in their rooms.

I insisted our room stay closed. Despite what my sister thought, I was never much of a partier. I only went to parties to be with my friends or if I liked a guy.

I had hoped my brother Connor invited Finn to the party because, with the whirlwind kiss he gave me on Tuesday, I didn’t know if he would remember to show up.

That was the only reason I was out in the crowd, nursing a beer.

“I needed this.” Abigail swung her arm over my shoulder, causing my beer to slosh in the cup and drip over my fingers.

“Glad you’re having fun. I think I’m going to head back to our room.”

Abigail gasped, “What? It’s Friday night, and we’re college students. I think it’s a law somewhere that we must party until at least two in the morning.”

I chuckled.

“Besides, your sister is here.” She waved to the studying room in the middle of the floor.

It was normally used as a quiet room to help drown out the noise of dorm life, but not tonight. From the looks of it, through the clear glass walls, it was being used as a make-out room.

“It seems she’s preoccupied. I am sure Hailey won’t even notice I’ve left.”

Abigail took a large gulp of the red drink in her plastic cup and placed it on the folding table that was being used as a drink station.

“I just saw your brother.” She stood on her toes and glanced around. “He was over there, near Sarah’s dorm.” She frowned and lowered back down. “I think he might like Sarah.”

“Okay.”

Abigail didn’t take her eyes off me, as if she were studying my expression. “Doesn’t that irritate you? That your brother would go after a friend of yours?”

I glanced over my shoulder at Sarah’s room, but I didn’t see him. “I never really thought about it. If he likes her, then sure. He can date whoever he wants; I’m not his keeper.”

“Really?” She appeared baffled by my response.

I nodded. “Yeah, why? Does it upset you that he likes her?”

Abigail’s eyes widened, and she shook her head. “Oh god, no. Like you said, he can date whoever he wants.” Then she snorted, gazed at someone over my shoulder, and waved at them.

“Hey!” she called out to the partygoer. “Got to go. Nice talk.” Abigail patted my shoulder and left.

That was weird.

I sighed and placed my mostly full cup on the table. Wiping my hand on my jeans, I made my way toward my room.

“Olivia,” Connor called from behind.

I had just reached my door and turned, leaning against it. “Hey. I heard you liked Sarah.” I tried to wiggle my eyebrows, but based on my brother’s reaction, I was failing.

He held his hand up, covering my forehead. “Dear god, stop. Two baboons mating look cooler than whatever it was you were trying to pull off.
